Germany (and Switzerland and Austria)

Germany (and Switzerland and Austria)

Alex’s graduation trip.  Of course it had to start with a flight on a 747, which led us to Germany.

First class on a Boeing 747. Very nice!

First stop, Trier:

Porta Nigra, one of many Roman ruins in Trier

Berlin, by way of Luxembourg:

Brandenburg Gate

An overnight train took us to Zurich, Switzerland, not far from Interlochen:

Hiking in the Black Forest:

Bavaria, and Ludwig’s castles:

Linderhof and Neuschwanstein

The Eagle’s Nest:

Salzburg:

Dubai

Dubai

Overnight layover from Ethiopia, enough time to see the Burj Kalifa and Dubai Mall.

Hawaii

Hawaii

Hawaii is a beautiful place to be! All of the people are so nice, but the food, not so much. I’m not a big fan of sea food, so I might be the only one who doesn’t enjoy the fresh fish. Boogie Boarding is a blast! I have to admit, there was a huge wave that I was to late for, so instead of going with the wave, I went into it. I got scratched up and knocked off my board. Other than that, I’d say that I did pretty well. (Except when Alex would crash into me on purpose!) Surfing is also a nice way to enjoy this gorgeous weather. I saw a turtle while surfing which gave me a kick. I’m so sad that in two days, I’m going to go home, but I’m overly excited to see my beautiful dog, Kona, which I find kind of funny since we are in the town of Kona!🤣

Cocoa Puff Run

Cocoa Puff Run

Scheduling a longer layover in Honolulu has become a family tradition. Many years ago we introduced our kids to Liliha Bakery and their signature pastry. Funny how this treat, not the beach, surfing or snorkeling, represents a successful trip Hawaii for our kids. This is a clear example of how travel often offers different things for different people. Often our kids see things very differently than we do, and it can be quite enlightening to compare highlights after the fact. With this in mind, there is no doubt in my mind that, a year or two from now, Alex and Maile will recall taking an Uber from the airport to Liliha Bakery on our way to Kona more than surfing Kahalu’u or watching whales beach from Hapuna Beach.
